Information:-

The return trip along the off lead section of the Pipeline Track from Morphetts Road to the lookout above Gentle Annie Falls takes approximately 4 hours. The track can also be accessed at Fern Tree and at the beginning of Chimney Pot Hill Road.  These starting points provide options for shorter walks.   Take your own supply of bags and drinking water as dogs are not permitted to drink out of the streams in this water catchment area.

This walk commences from the car park at the corner of Morphetts Road and the Huon Road.  Cross the road to the beginning of the track above the old school house.

After 200 metres the track forks at the junction with the Wellington Falls Track. Turn right and continue along the Pipeline Track.  At times the direction can be confusing as private roads and 4WD tracks cross the path although the track is mostly well signed.

The well maintained path is mostly flat with views initially over the Derwent River, Eastern Shore and down to Bruny Island, North West Bay, Kingston and Blackmans Bay.  The journey takes you through native regrowth with some large eucalypts, rainforest, people ferns, mosses and lichens.

Several bridges traverse creek beds and one of these, which has recently been upgraded, has an iron grate underfoot, which may be frightening for some dogs.  Small dogs may need to be carried over this bridge.

Several interpretation signs are located along the track providing information on local history and the development of Hobart’s water supply.  The wishing well has much historical significance and local folk law suggests that three circuits around the well will secure your wish.

Following two road crossings you enter the Fern Tree Bower which  became a favourite picnic spot in the 1860’s.  A rubbish bin is located here.  Continue to the right, past the Silver Falls Track and a further 15 minutes to Fern Tree.  This section of the walk takes about 50 minutes.   Facilities in Fern Tree include a playground, toilets, barbecues and picnic tables.   The Tavern and local takeaway provide food and beverages.

The next section of the track takes 15 minutes.  A sign across the road from the Tavern carpark marks the access.  The track drops steeply into the gully below the aqueduct and up to Chimney Pot Hill Road.  The steepest section, which may be difficult for some, has steps and a handrail.

The track continues across Chimney Pot Hill Road past the sluice house and McDermot’s farm and provides views over Hobart and the Eastern Shore.  After 30 minutes you arrive at the lookout above Gentle Annie Falls and that marks the end of the dog walking section of the Pipeline Track.   The return journey is a gentle uphill stroll to Chimney Pot Hill road where a picnic table and wood fired barbeque are provided at the carpark.

An option for those seeking a shorter trip is to park here and take an easy walk to the Gentle Annie Falls lookout (60 minutes return) or follow the more taxing section of the track past the aqueduct to Fern Tree (30 minutes return).
