Soldiers Memorial Avenue Details:-
Information:-This tree-lined avenue begins near the Tattersalls Aquatic Centre. The Avenue commemorates the soldiers who died during The First World War. Currently a collaborative project is under way to restore the avenue to its original plan. The trees are maintained or replaced as needed, memorial plinths and plaques have been positioned along the Avenue. The plaques provide a brief description of the lives of individual soldiers. Park your car at the Cenotaph. Walk through the underpass and turn left into Davies Avenue. The Soldiers Memorial Avenue commences 50 metres up the rise. Located here is a bronze statue honoring Tasmanian contingents in the South African War 1899-1902 and a monument to Charles Meredith. Cross the road into the Queens Domain Soldiers Memorial Avenue is a gently sloping, well maintained gravel track with lovely views over the Derwent River, Eastern Shore & Tasman Bridge. Toilets are located at the Cenotaph, near the bike hire and in the TCA grounds, half way along the walk (only available during the day and not during games or after hours). Toilets are also located in the Botanical Gardens but dogs don’t have access to the gardens. The grassland interpretation shelter, which provides information about native grasslands and their regeneration program, marks the end of Soldiers Memorial Avenue. You can return via the same route. For an alternative route, take the track down through grassland gully past the Botanical Gardens. The grassland track is narrow but well maintained with duck-board over the wetter areas. Keep walking to the right along the road above the Botanical Gardens and then cross to the footpath and head past Government House and the old Beaumaris Zoo. Continue along footpath and return to the Cenotaph car-park via the underpass. For a longer walk, turn left at the grasslands interpretation shelter, cross the Upper Domain Road and head 30 metres up the track towards the reservoirs and Wireless Institute. Turn left or right onto the Joggers Track, which is a 2.2km loop. Refer to the Jogging Track Walk for further information.
