Junction Cabins Old Hobartians Track Details:-
Information:-This walk commences at the beginning of Hunters Track on the Pinnacle Road, about 30 metres before the Chalet. Limited parking is available on either side of the road. The Chalet is 1000 metres above sea level, so take care as weather conditions can change quickly. The journey follows a wide circuit around to Junction cabin, 400 metres below the Pinnacle Road and is very steep and demanding in parts. Initially the track descends very steeply down a series of stone steps. Several creeks on this walk provide drinking water for dogs but these are not evenly spread so it is advisable to carry water. After 15 minutes the track divides. Hunters Track heads directly to Junction Cabin (35 minutes). Continue straight ahead along the Old Hobartians Track. The path is narrow, rocky and uneven in parts and may be a bit rough underfoot for some dogs. The Newtown Rivulet is crossed several times as you zigzag down the mountain. After a further 15 minutes you meet the Lost World (45 min one way) and Big Ben (1 hour one way) tracks. These may be worth a look but the Lost World isn’t safe for dog walking. Vegetation becomes more like rainforest as you continue along the Old Hobartians Track, with moss covered fallen logs and conditions can be muddy and slippery underfoot. The change in vegetation keeps the walk interesting. Upon reaching the Lenah Valley Road turnoff head right towards Junction Cabin (1 hour). This section is easier walking and crosses Newtown Falls after 20 minutes. Turn right at the Old Farm Fire Trail and the Junction Cabin is a steep 20 minute walk. The walk so far can take up to three hours. Return to the Chalet car park via Hunters Track. This is a steep, uneven and narrow track, with stairs in some of the steeper sections. The climb is 400 metres over 1.8 km and can take up to 1 hour and 20 minutes, depending on your level of fitness. There are some interesting rock formations above the track, including Crocodile Rock. Two short sections of the walk traverse rocky slopes where you step across boulders. The track here isn’t well defined in parts and is therefore not recommended in poor weather. These rocky sections can be slippery in the wet which may be difficult for some dogs and their owners. This is a tough track but the vegetation, rock formations and scenery are well worth the effort.
