Information:-

Facilities at the Springs carpark include picnic tables, wood fired barbeque, shelter shed, toilets and a water tap.  The walk begins at the sign on the gravel path behind the toilets which heads to Sphinx Rock and via the Lenah Valley Track and on to Junction Cabin.  It is advisable to take water as it may not always be available.

The track passes through bushland on the lower slopes of Mount Wellington and provides views of Hobart, from Bridgewater to Blackmans Bay, the Derwent River, Eastern Shore and across to the Tasman Peninsular and Bruny Island.

Initially the track is well formed, well maintained and reasonably level.  After 10-15 minutes you arrive at the Sphinx Rock turnoff.  Take the short walk down to the safety gate, which reminds one to take care as this is an exposed and unfenced cliff top. The view of the Organ Pipes is spectacular from here.

Return to the Lenah Valley Track, continue on past the Lower Sawmill Track and Rock Cabin.  From here the track narrows and becomes rough underfoot and uneven with exposed rocks.

The Octopus Tree is a 40 minute detour off the main track and is well worth the effort.  The track drops down into the valley and can be slippery and muddy in parts.  The Octopus tree is nestled in a glade of ferns and rainforest.  This massive tree is supported by its exposed tenticle-like roots.

Prior to reaching the Junction is the Lone Cabin circuit, a interesting but steep 10 minute detour.

The Junction is an open grassy area with a picnic table and wood fired barbeque. The stone cabin has a fireplace, table and chairs and water tank although water may not be available in the drier months.  This picnic area is a junction of five tracks.  Our track returns to the Springs. Hunters Track heads up to the Chalet.  The other tracks are the Old Farm Fire Track, the Lenah Valley Fire Track and the Lenah Valley Walking Track.
