Information:-

Knocklofty Reserve provides a network of tracks through 140 hectares of bush land and protects a diverse range of native forest communities.   Wallabies and other native wildlife are common so dogs must be under effective control.  There is no water so take it

The expansive car park at the top of  Forrest is open between 8:00am and 4:15pm.  Three picnic tables are provided nearby and a dog bin and bags is located near the sign which marks the beginning of the off lead zone.  Dogs must be under effective control. Keep to the roads and tracks.

This walk initially follows the Summit Loop Track and is fairly easy going for the first 10 minutes.  The track then heads to the left, climbs towards the summit and narrows.  Steps are provided in the steeper parts and there are views from Sandy Bay, the Derwent River, Tasman Bridge, Eastern Shore and over the northern suburbs.

After a further 5 minutes the Summit Loop Track turns left up the slope.  Continue straight ahead along the  Mount  Stuart Circuit.  At the next junction continue straight ahead towards Mount Stuart.  From the top of Mount Stuart there are well maintained steps leading down the steep slope. The track ends at the top of Mount Stuart Road where limited parking is available.  The gate for vehicle access is open between 8:00am –  4:30pm.  A rubbish bin is provided here but not dog bags.   Across the road is a viewing platform on top of the resevoir.  Views from here extend from Lower Sandy Bay, Tasman Peninsular Hobart CBD and over the northern suburbs.

Return via the same route, or for a more scenic experience, walk 100 metres down the road to the beginning of the Fiona Allan Memorial Walk.  Two bench seats are provided for rest and enjoyment of the city views before this 15 minute track begins to climb.  This is a steep, narrow and uneven track that is rocky underfoot and could be slippery when wet.

Turn left at the end of this track and after a further five minutes turn right following the Mount Stewart Circuit. This track provides views of the Mount Wellington Ranges.  After a further five minutes you arrive at a gravel 4WD track.  One option is to turn left and return to the car park via the Summit Loop Track.  For a longer walk turn right and head down the hill a very steep & slippery five minute walk to the bottom.   (or… to avoid the steep walk down & up again, take the track straight ahead as a short cut to the next fire trail).   To the right, at the bottom, is a short walk to the top of the Lenah Valley Quarry and there is no further public access.  So, turn left and continue up the hill and at the next junction, after 10 minutes, veer to the right which leads into the Summit Loop Track and back to the car park.

Along the return journey you can turn off at the Frog Ponds/Kirby Court sign and take the short circuit around this conservation area which is home to six frog species.  Take the Poets Road Track if you care for another diversion.  This is a steep 20 minute  return walk down to the top of Poets Road, where there is a bag dispenser and bin.
